Senior D Dragon Boat Racing: The Story Behind a New Class
Liisa Reimann tells the Senior D dragon boat story. Compare her account with the IDBF decision and see what the new class does and does not establish.

Dragon boat racing has a new international Senior D class for paddlers aged 70 and over. In a public Dragon Boat Skool post, Liisa Reimann traces the campaign through Canadian and regional competitions. The International Dragon Boat Federation's September 2026 announcement independently confirms the new class. The distinction matters: a place to compete against an age peer group is not a promise that every event will offer a race or that participation is medically appropriate for everyone.
The IDBF says Senior D recognizes athletes aged 70 and over who often previously raced in Senior C. Reimann's public post, displayed as 10 days old when checked on 14 October 2026, credits Canadian paddler Ruth Bedell's long advocacy. The federation credits a multinational Senior D Advocacy Group and a motion presented by Dragon Boat Canada and the Italian federation. These accounts support the class change but do not independently prove every detail of Bedell's personal timeline.
A competition pathway built by its participants
Reimann says Bedell began assembling older paddlers in 2017, recruited 60 interested women after a newspaper notice, and pressed for a dedicated racing division. Her account puts Senior D at the Canadian National Championships in 2022, CanAm in 2024 and PanAm in 2025, before the international decision. These are her historical claims. The 2024 CanAm division results show Senior D entries, while the IDBF confirms that PanAmDBF and EuropeanDBF had already included the class in championships. We did not independently verify the newspaper notice or the claimed 2017 and 2022 steps.
The IDBF frames the change as recognition of people already paddling, rather than an invention of a new population. That is a more precise story than saying the federation made older people active. It changed an eligibility structure. Club organizers still need crews, event entries, coaching and appropriate safety practices to turn a rule into a race.
What the comments reveal about the remaining gap
The visible discussion is not just applause. Debbie Schweitzer says she would like a Senior D team in her area, and Reimann replies that she thinks one could be assembled in Pittsburgh. Jill Schieve asks about more competitive options for aging breast-cancer survivor paddlers and whether a separate division exists there. Reimann answers cautiously that, as far as she knows, it does not and asks another member to weigh in. That exchange is useful evidence of an unresolved category question, not an official ruling on breast-cancer paddler classes.
The community behind the post
Reimann's public Dragon Boat Skool About page displayed 168 members and a free base group on 14 October. It describes steering courses developed by Reimann and Joann Fegley, video lessons, scenarios, coaching calls and peer discussion. The page says courses are a separate upgrade. Its claim that two courses are endorsed by the United States Dragon Boat Federation was not independently checked here. This context explains why an age-class discussion appears in a skills and coaching community, but the Senior D decision came from the sport's governing process, not from Skool.
For other community builders, the lesson is about listening to a group affected by an institutional constraint and recording the steps from advocacy to policy. It is not an earnings or member-growth case. The community engagement guide covers how a specific question can draw practical responses; the community ideas guide covers why a narrow shared identity can create a useful room. Neither establishes outcomes for Dragon Boat Skool.
Frequently asked questions
What is Senior D in dragon boat racing?
The IDBF describes it as a new international class recognizing paddlers aged 70 and over within their own age group.
Did the IDBF confirm the change?
Yes. Its 24 September 2026 news release announces the class and credits the advocacy and national federations behind the motion.
Who is Ruth Bedell?
Reimann describes Bedell as a Canadian paddler who pushed for more age-appropriate competition. The personal sequence in the Skool post remains a source-attributed account.
Will every dragon boat event offer Senior D?
No such universal promise appears in the federation announcement. Check the entry rules for a particular event.
Is Dragon Boat Skool free?
Its public About page displayed a free base community on 14 October. Steering courses are described as an upgrade whose current price was not verified.
Does the new class settle every adaptive or survivor division question?
No. A comment asks about breast-cancer survivor divisions; the thread does not establish an official answer for them.
