The Canon Club Review: Sarah Crosley's Classics on Skool

The Canon Club is Sarah Crosley's Skool book club, one classic per month. Its free room and $7/month guide solve different problems.

The Canon Club Review: Sarah Crosley's Classics on Skool

The Canon Club is a free, private Skool book club that reads one classic work a month together. Creator Sarah Crosley also advertises a separate paid guide, listed at $7/month or $77/year on 5 November 2026 and at $12/month or $100/year on 16 October. Those are different offers: joining the community was displayed as free when we checked, while the guide promises structured help finishing the book. The public page did not expose the paid checkout or the guide itself, so the paid tier is a creator-advertised price, not a completed purchase we independently tested.

The club appeared on page 11 of English Hobbies Discovery. Its rendered About page, captured at 02:35 UTC on 16 October 2026, showed Sarah Crosley as owner, 265 members, one admin and a free join option. No review rating was visible in the capture. On 5 November 2026 the page showed 326 members, still with one admin and a free join. The displayed name is "The Canon Club | A Book Club"; its handle is the-canon-club-9141.

Observed reading offer

  • Free room: one classic per month, edition guidance and daily discussion advertised
  • Paid guide: $12/month or $100/year in the About copy on 16 October; $7/month or $77/year on 5 November; separate from free joining
  • Paid extras advertised: weekly spoiler-aware guide, watch-along resources, end-of-book live call and past-guide vault
  • Monthly book: Frankenstein on 16 October; Dracula for November
  • Snapshot, 16 October: 265 members; private; one admin

What is the distinctive problem this club tackles?

Sarah's page argues that readers often abandon classics because they choose an edition or translation without understanding how much it changes the reading experience. That is her framing, not an independently measured reason most people stop. The offer tries to remove two practical barriers: deciding which text to read and understanding it well enough to keep going. A one-book-per-month rhythm gives members a shared reference point; daily discussion makes it acceptable to say a passage was confusing.

The paid guide is more specific than generic summaries. According to the page, each week's material covers only what a member has read so far, flags what to notice next and avoids spoilers. It also advertises an Afterword call and an archive of previous guides. We did not enter the private classroom or verify a sample, so a buyer should ask to see the guide format, the book calendar and the next call time. The page does not say that books or paid editions are included in the guide fee.

How should a reader choose between free and paid?

Start with the free room if discussion and a monthly commitment are enough. The paid guide is most relevant if the obstacle is comprehension, follow-through or wanting curated context as the book progresses. The "about $8 a month" annual framing in the 16 October copy was a calculation from $100/year, not a separate monthly billing option. Annual payment also changes cancellation flexibility; check actual checkout terms before selecting it.

This is distinct from the Cozy Escape Book Club, whose public promise is clean and Christian book curation with two genre-diverse picks. The Canon Club is explicitly about classics, edition selection and completing one demanding text. For builders, the free discussion can reveal which reading problems merit a paid guide, but public membership count is not proof of paid conversion. Our freemium model guide, community engagement guide, classroom guide and About-page guide explain those design choices.

Best fit: a reader who wants a steady classics schedule and discussion. Try the free room first; only pay for the guide if its sample, cadence and live-call timing solve your actual reading difficulty.

Independent review of the English Hobbies Discovery page 11 card and The Canon Club's rendered Skool About page, captured 16 October 2026. Cover image credited to The Canon Club on Skool. The free join was visible; the guide prices, $12 monthly and $100 annual on 16 October and $7 monthly and $77 annual on 5 November, were advertised in creator copy, not independently checked in a separate checkout. We did not inspect the private discussions, paid guide, book purchases or live calls. The Skool Files is not affiliated with Sarah Crosley or Skool.
